She needs more than just a "SYMPATHY"

“My Grandmother always teaches me and my younger sisters to be good, to study hard so that we could get in to higher education, because she did not get the chance to do so herself, because she studied little and she has had to struggle. She does not want me and my younger sisters to live in hardship.”

Although Siriporn Yookashane or “Nam” has been underprivileged she is a diligent student and had studied hard, so that now, her academic results are always in the upper sections of her class. Nam is confident that “studying is important; if I didn’t study I would have no future.” Nam is 12 years old and is studying in Grade 6 at Yoo Prachanukroh School in  Nong Seu District, Prathumathani Province.
Currently she lives with her Grandmother and three younger sisters aged ten years, one year and six months old, in a single story house, where the walls and roof are made out of corrugated iron. This simply built house has bamboo lattice floors on the outside area whilst inside the house the floors are made of old wooden boards. The house is situated in the middle of a swamp on a piece of land that belongs to their neighbor. There is a small wooden lath walk-way from the road to the house. In the house there is only a mattress, fan and a few other essential house hold items.

Raya Yookashane, 60 years, Nam's Grandmother

Nam’s parents are often not home because they are always working as day laborers outside the area, leaving only Nam’s Grandmother to look after the four children. Nam’s Grandmother has an income of about 150-200 baht per day, from making ‘kao tom mutd,’ a Thai dessert, and making barbequed sticky rice she sells on to vendors in the market. Nam’s Grandmother uses this income for food, powdered milk, and school pocket money for her grandchildren because alone, the income of Nam’s parents are unstable and are not always enough for household expense. Every day after school and on the weekends, besides helping to look after her younger sisters Nam is always helping her Grandmother with making the Thai desserts. On days where her Grandmother is sick and unable to make these desserts Nam does not have any pocket money to take to school.

Conditions of Nam's house

Although Nam lacks warmth from her parents she understands why her parents have to so work hard. She has never let this become a chip on her shoulder and uses it instead as a driving force to motivate herself to study harder, so that she can fulfil her dream of becoming a doctor and having money to send her younger sisters in to higher education and to help her family out of poverty. She thus decided to apply for a scholarship with the EDF foundation to continue her high school education starting in the upcoming 2014 academic year.

Today, many other underprivileged children, like Nam, are trying to fight against their circumstances of poverty. They need more than sympathy and pity, they need help and support from someone who will give them the opportunity to make a better future for themselves through receiving education.
