Why are EDF scholarships only awarded to students living in the northeastern region (the Isan region) of Thailand?
Q Why are EDF scholarships only awarded to students living in the northeastern region (the Isan region) of Thailand?
A :

Owing to a harsh climate and hostile landscape of the Isan region, the people there, mostly farmers, are constantly suffering from poor harvest and droughts. The average annual household income of Isan people is known to be the lowest in the country, inevitably resulting in poor quality of life and limited educational opportunities. Once they graduated from primary school, it is often the case that poor economic condition of the household has forced them to give up studying and, instead, head to the city in search of jobs. This has brought about a number of serious social problems, including child labour in the informal sectors. As EDF realizes the severity of this on-going social situation, we are thus committed to put an end to Isan poverty and underage, rural-to-urban labor mobility.

How can donors be certain that the scholarship money reach the students safely and are not misused?
Q How can donors be certain that the scholarship money reach the students safely and are not misused?
A :

The Provincial Committee, working in close collaboration with EDF, will oversee the general management of scholarship funds granted to students. As a way to ensure transparency and efficiency, the money will be deposited directly into a bank account, set up in the individual student’s name. Withdrawals can only be made with cosignatory of the student and his/her guidance teacher. EDF will also regularly monitor account’s activity, making sure that the donated scholarship money is used solely for educational purposes. Typical expenses include school/scout uniforms, shoes, sport gears, stationeries, textbooks, commuting fees and lunch fees.

Q : Is the annual scholarship donation enough to meet students’ educational needs?
A :

For every 2,000-baht scholarship per academic year per student, 500 baht will be used to cover administrative expenses and the remaining 1,500 baht will be used to support student’s educational expenses. At the present, 1,500 baht is considered enough to provide student with school uniform, shoes, and basic stationery.

Is it possible for donors to continue supporting their students after they have completed lower secondary education.
Q Is it possible for donors to continue supporting their students after they have completed lower secondary education.
A :

Whether or not it is possible for donors to continue supporting the student depends very much on the wish of the student in question. If he/she wishes to further his/her studies at an upper secondary or a vocational school , EDF will coordinate with school and discuss the procedures. Please inform us your intention of continuing support by January 15th (i.e. before the end of the school year in March.)

Q What should donors do had they wish to send gifts or letters to scholarship students?

In order to protect donor privacy, we do not share donors’ personal information with scholarship students; only donors’ names and surnames are known to the students. Should donors wish to send gifts or correspond via letter with the students, EDF could act as an intermediary.
